Duke Boone, the sheriff of Silver Gorge, Nevada, would hear those haunting words echo in his nightmares for the rest of his life. After he witnessed one of his oldest friends dissolve into nothingness on a saloon floor, Sheriff Boone knew that something was deeply wrong around town. What he didn’t realize was that his problems were both deeply supernatural and yet so perfectly human in nature.

My debut novel started off as a 1,200-word short story with a shocking twist ending. I thought, “Nobody expects the gunman in a Western to dissolve into black goop rather than getting shot by the hero,” so that’s what I went with. However, after writing that story with a haunting twist ending, I realized that Duke Boone wasn’t the only person who wanted to know what is down in that mine.

Almost as soon as she finished reading the short story, my wife looked at me and said, “Well. What was in that mine?” At the time, I had no idea. But as I thought about the question and let it sit with me, I slowly realized the story that would become Black Star.

This book is a traditional Western in so many ways, with greedy mine bosses, colorful characters, and wicked gunmen who pose a very real human threat. However, this traditional Western takes place alongside a uniquely unfamiliar terrain, where an otherworldly threat lingers beneath the surface of Silver Gorge.
